1. Monday Market Monitor - China - WEEK 05 - No fireworks after holiday - 06 Feb, 2012
Top
Chinas inventory on construction steel sees growth when the Spring Festival is over.
Most market participants deny the possibility of positively stockpile by traders which in their point of view is passively replenishment. For the steel market after the Festival, demands incur difficulty to kick off and the scene that stock is larger than delivery sets to continue.
Alarming features of 2011 on steel market frustrates people
1. The percentage of loss incurring enterprises is climbing when it is approaching to the year end;
2. No winter stock is seen for most traders;
3. Traders are reluctant to push the price higher before and after the Festival. Steel market might not sense any optimism at least in the short term.
Then how to explain the increasing inventory catches the attention. Insiders indicate that it is a passive stockpile rather than normal stock driven by market demands. Reason supporting this statement is that no obvious sign for initiation has been seen while traders get arrivals after the Festival in accordance with monthly plan.
If compared carefully, both inventory volume and increasing amount is less than those for 2011. On the one hand, this situation concludes that steel mills release capacity stays in low on the other hand, trader are generally maintain cautious and are reluctant to build inventory.
The biggest constraint factor for steel market is demands instead of supply. The sluggish transactions give no impetus to price rise. Demands recover hardly; regulation on real estate exerts pressure on steel market, hence it is difficult for steel price to hike. But when taking cost and capital into consideration, the dumping room for the price is also limited. Small ranged fluctuation will be the major move.
The Chinese Long Product Price Index CLPPI has gone up by 14 points last week whereas the Chinese Flat Products Index CFPPI remained stable. The overall price index CHISPI inclined by 6 points.

2. Iranian steel market trend in week 05 2012 - Billet - 06 Feb, 2012
Top
During last week billet market was downward in Iran as
1. Sections prices dropped significantly
2. Higher billet market inventory as imported parcels have arrived
3. New Iranian Year is near and traders and producers are more aware about their inventory level, so try to sell more.
Billet price was around USD 958 per tonne to USD 977 per tonne at the beginning of the week but dropped to USD 888 per tonne in the middle of the week. As year end is near in Iran, transactions levels has declined and are around 500 tonnes per lot.
In global markets billet price is decreasing but problems in opening LC wont let Iranian buyers to be active in foreign markets. Besides buying tonnages are low, so they prefer to purchase from domestic market. Domestic billet was around USD 870 per tonne to USD 888 per tonne ex work, depending on quality. The current trend won't change till end of current Iranian Year as any rise in demand level is unlikely.

3. Monday Market Monitor - India - WEEK 05 - Rally in longs fizzles out - 06 Feb, 2012
Top
Long product market in India slumps as month end excitement fizzles away. During last week, the drama of rally in long product prices terminated exposing the real levels. Subterfuge evident in the last few days saw light of the day as the mills opted for roll over. Indian mills were still susceptible in risking a hike with economic headwinds yet to abate.
Impact of the excitement fizzling away prices plummeted all over India. However a belated rally in steel prices cannot be over ruled so soon. With economic headlines making waves of late as inflation plummets and economic growth picks up in the penultimate months before culmination of FY 12. Till than market will stay put swinging to speculative calypso
The suspense over February pricing ended in whimper with the mills opting for roll over. Succinctly it is tactful move by the Indian mills averse to taking chances when the demand incubating after harrowing Q3.
Key demand driving parameters from infrastructure and manufacturing sectors yet to blossom prudence was sensible. Undeniably Q4 portends to be break from the mossy Q2 & Q3 with most of the economic indicators showing a healthy trend.
With inflation dipping to and encouraging 7.4% in November and the IIP making a turnaround at 5.6% economic headwinds are ebbing for a change. HSBC Markit PMI at 57 points in January has sent rankles in the already ascendant market. Auto sector has shown encouraging tendency with most the major recording accelerated production and sales.
The Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI has gone down by 5 points last week whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI has gone up by 52 points. The overall price index INDSPI inclined by 22 points.

5. Monday Market Monitor - Metals - WEEK 05 - Recovery on weekend - 06 Feb, 2012
Top
Base metals at LME feel last week ahead of a key US jobs report that could shed more light on the pace of US economic growth. But they recovered a bit on Friday after a sharp improvement in the job market and higher factory orders raised hopes for stronger demand.
That ended an erratic week of small losses as investors looked for clues about what's ahead for the global economy.
The government said 243,000 jobs were added in January across a broad array of industries. Manufacturing alone added 50,000 jobs, the most in a year. Januarys unemployment rate dropped to 8.3 percent and factory orders rose 1.1 percent in December.
Separately, a trade group said service companies grew at the fastest pace in 11 months in January as companies hired workers to keep up with demand.
The data pointed to an improving US economy.
